How to review without a connection in the app

Applies to: Android and iPhone appLast updated:

Yes, in the Keeplet app for Android and iPhone you can review without a connection: cards, ratings and due dates are stored on your phone, and the SM-2 algorithm runs there. Without an account there is nothing to send; with an account, ratings wait in a queue and go out by themselves as soon as the network returns.

Before you start

You don't need to do anything special: there is no "offline mode" to turn on. The cards to review are the ones already saved on your phone, so if you added material from another device, open the app first with the network on to receive it.

Steps

  1. Open the app and go to Today: the number of cards and the estimated time are read from your phone's data.
  2. Tap Review now and review as usual: flip the card and choose Not at all, A little, Fairly well or Perfectly. Under each rating you already see when the card will come back.
  3. At the end, tap Done. The summary ("You reviewed 12 cards.") and the statistics are calculated on your phone.

What happens to my ratings?

It depends on how you use the app.

Situation What happens to ratings
Without an account (guest) They stay on the phone only. No queue and nothing is sent
With an account, offline The card changes immediately on the phone and the rating is queued with the exact date and time
With an account, back online Ratings are sent in order, card by card. The server recalculates them with the same algorithm

With an account, you can see how much is waiting to be sent in Profile, at Saving: "N changes to send", which becomes "All saved" once sending is complete. A similar message appears in small type on the notebook screen.

When are queued ratings sent?

The app tries to sync at launch, when it comes back to the foreground, about two seconds after each new change and, if an attempt fails, again after 30 seconds, 1, 2 and 5 minutes. You don't have to touch anything. For the full picture, see How sync works in the Keeplet app.

What does need a connection?

Reviewing doesn't, but other features do:

  • creating an account or signing in ("You need a connection to continue.");
  • the notification center, which reads its list from the server;
  • Import from Anki, Add a shared notebook and Share;
  • Connections (for example Claude).

Writing notes, creating cards, searching, reading statistics and the reminder all work offline.

What happens if the session expires while I'm offline?

Ratings stay queued on your phone. In Profile you see "The session has expired. Sign in again to keep saving.": sign in again and they will go out.

Frequently asked questions

Do I lose ratings if I leave the app?

No: a rating is written to the phone 3 seconds after you give it (or immediately if you close the review or give the next rating). It stays there until it has been sent. The exception is signing out of the account with Sign out: if you have unsent changes, the app warns you "You have 1 change not sent yet. If you sign out you lose it. Sign out anyway?" (with more changes the wording and the number change).

Does the website show my offline reviews?

After they're sent, yes. While ratings are queued, the website doesn't know about them: to use the app and the website together without surprises, see Use the Keeplet app and website with one account.

Do the app's statistics count offline reviews?

Yes. The rating history is on the phone and the statistics update with every rating, even without a network.

Do dates follow my phone's time zone?

The "day" for Today, the daily goal and the streak follows your phone's date: the count restarts at midnight, local time.

What do I do if data isn't syncing?

Check the Saving row in Profile and read Keeplet app data not syncing: what to do.
