What happens if you go offline during review
On the Keeplet website you can keep going in a review that is already open even if the connection drops: the ratings you give offline stay queued in the browser and are sent by themselves when the network returns. This only applies to review ratings. You cannot start a session while offline, and notes you write or move need a connection.
Before you start
The session must already be loaded: the cards come from the server when you press Start review. If you open review without a network you see "Could not load the cards" with the Try again button. The website must also notice that you are offline: it learns this from the browser, which usually reports it when you lose the connection completely.
What do I see when I go offline?
At the top of the whole personal area a banner appears with the message "You're offline — review votes will be sent when the connection returns; other changes need a connection". Only review ratings sync by themselves.
Steps
- Open review with the connection active and start rating cards.
- If the network drops, carry on as usual: read the card, press Show the answer and give the rating.
- Each rating given offline is queued in the browser instead of being sent. For the first three seconds you can still press Undo.
- At the end of the session Done for today. appears as usual: the summary is based on what you rated.
- When the connection returns, or the next time you open Keeplet, the queued ratings are sent one after another, in the order you gave them. Each rating keeps the time at which you gave it, even if it arrives hours later.
What does not work offline?
| Action | Offline |
|---|---|
| Rating the cards of an already open session | Yes, ratings are queued |
| Starting a new review | No: the cards do not load |
| Writing or editing notes | The text stays on the page but is not saved: you see "Not saved, retrying…" at the top. It is saved when the network returns, but only if the page stays open |
| Moving, deleting or converting blocks | No |
| Opening new pages, such as notebooks and statistics | No: the data comes from the server. Pages that are already open stay visible |
Frequently asked questions
Are my ratings lost if I close the browser before the network returns?
They stay queued on the device and in the browser you were using, not on another one. They are sent when the connection returns or, if you had closed the browser, as soon as you reopen Keeplet with the network on. No other steps are needed.
Can I see how many ratings are queued?
The website does not show a counter of pending ratings. To check that they arrived, after the network returns open Statistics and see whether the number of reviewed cards has gone up.
What happens with a slow or unstable network?
If the browser shows as connected but sending fails, because the network is unstable or the server does not respond, the rating is still queued and retried later, as if you were offline.
Does installing Keeplet as an app make it usable offline?
No, not for your data. Installing opens the website in its own window, but cards, notes and statistics always come from the server: see How to install Keeplet as an app from your browser.
What about the app for Android and iPhone?
The app has its own offline behavior. Read How sync works in the Keeplet app.
