How to review your cards every day in the app

Applies to: Android and iPhone appLast updated:

In the Keeplet app for Android and iPhone you review from the Today screen: tap Review now, read the question, flip the card, choose how well you remembered it and move to the next one. A session lasts a few minutes and works even without a connection.

Before you start

You need cards that are due. If you don't have any yet, see How to create a card by highlighting text. Reviewing works without an account.

Steps

  1. Open the Today tab and tap Review now. To review a single notebook, tap the notebook in the "To review" list or, inside the notebook, the Review button.
  2. The first card opens with its question. Try to remember the answer before flipping it.
  3. Tap the card ("Tap to see the answer") or the Show the answer button, which carries the caption "Try to remember it first". The card flips and the answer appears.
  4. Under the card you see "How well did you remember it?" Tap one of the four ratings: Not at all, A little, Fairly well or Perfectly. Each rating shows when the card will come back ("tomorrow", "in 6 days"…). See How to rate a card: the four ratings.
  5. You move straight to the next card. For 3 seconds, at the bottom, you can tap Undo if you picked the wrong rating (it isn't there on the last card, because the summary opens right away).
  6. Repeat until the last card. A bar at the top shows your progress.

What happens next

At the end of the session the Review finished screen opens: how many cards you reviewed ("You reviewed 12 cards."), how long it took ("It took you 4 minutes.") and when your next card comes back. Tap Done to go back to Today. If cards remain due beyond the daily goal, "N more are left. Continue?" appears with a Continue button.

While the reminder is off, at the end of a session the app may offer to turn it on and to choose how many cards a day: see How to set a review reminder in the app.

How many cards do I review in a session?

A session contains at most the cards in your daily goal (15 if you haven't changed it) minus the ones you've already reviewed today, and at least one. You change the goal in Profile › Preferences › Daily goal. New cards come first, then the ones overdue the longest.

What happens if I answer "Not at all"?

The card goes to the end of the session and you see it again before finishing. While you repeat it, the progress bar doesn't advance: it only counts when you give a rating other than Not at all. If you close the session before seeing it again, the card will come back the next day.

What other actions are there during review?

  • See in the note: for cards created from a highlighted sentence, it shows the source paragraph in a "From your note" sheet. Close the sheet and carry on rating.
  • The Edit card pencil lets you fix the question and answer without losing your place or your ratings.
  • The Close the review X leaves the session. The ratings you've already given stay saved.
  • A card without a question (a "prompt") appears already flipped, with the answer.
  • With a very large system text size or with the phone in landscape, Show the answer and the four ratings stay fixed at the bottom and only the card scrolls.

Does it work without a connection?

Yes. The review reads from and writes to the database on your phone. If you have an account, ratings made offline are sent to the server as soon as the network returns, and the server recalculates the due dates with the same algorithm (SM-2).

Frequently asked questions

How long does a review session last?

The app estimates 20 seconds per card, rounded to the minute. With 15 cards that's about 5 minutes: you see it under "Today's session" before you start.

Can I review more than my daily goal?

Yes. When you finish, if cards remain due, tap Continue; or raise the goal in Profile.

Can I undo a rating?

Only within 3 seconds of the rating, and not on the last card of the session. After that window you can fix the card's text but not the rating: the card will come back when scheduled.

Is there an active mode (cloze) like on the website?

No. The app only has the flip card with four ratings. The cloze exercise and active mode belong to the Keeplet website: read Active vs passive review in Keeplet.

Do I really need to review every day?

The algorithm has you review each card when it's needed, so you don't have to review "everything" every day: only what appears in Today. To understand why, read Spaced repetition explained with Keeplet.
