Email reminders and push notifications in Keeplet

Applies to: websiteLast updated:

On the Keeplet website you manage reminders from Settings › Notifications: the Email reminders switch writes to you when you have flashcards to review, and the Push notifications switch shows them directly on your device. The two are independent and you can use them together or turn both off.

Before you start

You need an account (see How to create a Keeplet account). Reminders only concern flashcards: plain notes do not generate any. A new flashcard is due right away, the others become due on the date decided by the algorithm (see Spaced repetition explained with Keeplet).

How do I turn the email reminder on or off?

  1. Open Settings (on a phone, tap Profile in the bottom bar) and go to the Notifications section.
  2. Use the Email reminders switch ("Receive an email when you have notes to review").
  3. Wait for the message "Email preference updated".

The switch is on by default. The email arrives at your account address, with the heading "Time to review!" and the button Review now. Emails and push notifications are in the language chosen in your account (Italiano or English, see Profile, theme and language). Keeplet checks every hour and writes to you at most once every 24 hours, even if you have many cards due.

How do I turn push notifications on?

  1. In Settings › Notifications turn on the Push notifications switch ("On this browser."). If the warning "Push notifications are not yet enabled on this browser" appears, press Enable.
  2. When the browser asks, allow notifications for keeplet.app.
  3. Wait for the message "Notification preferences updated".

After activation the When to notify you row appears, showing the chosen mode. Press it to change it.

What is the difference between "When you have cards to review" and "Smart"?

Mode What you receive How it works
When you have cards to review One summary notification: "You have N cards to review!" You tap the notification and review opens
Smart One notification for each due card, with the question in the text From the notification you can press I remember it to record the review without opening the website, or Open

In When you have cards to review you do not choose a time: the notification is sent when cards become due (Keeplet checks every few minutes) and a card that has already been notified is not notified again until it becomes due again. The Smart buttons depend on the browser and the system: where they do not appear, tap the notification to open the review.

I remember it counts as a successful review, with a rating between Somewhat and Great. Keeplet warns that this mode is less effective than active review done on the website: use it for quick reviews when you cannot open it.

What happens if I do not review for a few days?

If push notifications are on and you have not reviewed for at least 3 days, Keeplet also sends you a "Your review is waiting" reminder, at most once every 4 hours until you review.

Do I get a notification when I reach a streak milestone?

Yes, with push notifications on: when your streak of days in a row reaches 3, 7, 14, 30, 50, 100, 150, 200, 250, 300 or 365 days you receive a notification such as "7 days in a row" ("You're keeping your review streak going"), once per milestone. For what counts as a streak read Daily goal and streak in Keeplet.

How do I turn push notifications off?

Turn off the Push notifications switch. The choice applies to the whole account: notifications stop on all devices where you had turned them on, and to get them back you will have to turn them on again on each one. The mode (When you have cards to review or Smart) is the same for the whole account.

Frequently asked questions

Can I choose what time to receive reminders?

No, not on the website. Reminders arrive when cards are due. In the app for Android and iPhone you can instead choose a time: read How to set a review reminder in the app.

Do push notifications work on iPhone?

Yes, but only with Safari and after adding the website to your Home Screen. All the steps are in How to get Keeplet notifications on iPhone.

Do I have to turn on push notifications on every device?

Yes. The switch applies to the browser you are using: on another computer or phone you have to turn them on again, pressing Enable if the warning appears.

Nothing arrives, what do I check?

Check the browser permissions, the mode and the spam folder for emails. You find the complete list in Keeplet notifications not working: what to check.
