How to import an Anki deck into Keeplet
On the Keeplet website you import an Anki deck from Settings › Data, by clicking Import from Anki and choosing the text file you exported from Anki with the "Notes in Plain Text (*.txt)" option. The file cannot exceed about 1 MB of text (one million characters) and images are not imported: only the front and back text of each card comes through.
Before you start
You must be signed in and have exported the deck from Anki on your computer. Keeplet accepts only the plain text format (.txt): .apkg files are not supported.
How do I export the deck from Anki?
- In Anki on your computer, open the File menu and choose Export (the items may have slightly different names in different versions).
- As the export format, choose Notes in Plain Text (*.txt).
- Choose the deck to export. Keeplet puts the whole file in a single notebook and does not rebuild decks: if you want to keep them separate, do one export and one import for each deck.
- You can leave the include checkboxes (HTML, tags, deck name, note type, identifier) as they are: Keeplet recognizes and skips the service columns.
- Save the
.txtfile. Its name will become the name of the notebook in Keeplet, so it is worth giving it a clear one.
Steps
- Open Settings and go to the Data section.
- Click the Import from Anki row ("One notebook named after the file, split every 250 cards.").
- In the Import from Anki window, choose the file in the Anki export file field. If the file is too big, "The file is too large: about 1 MB of text at most" appears.
- Click Import and wait for the result.
- Read the Import complete summary and click Done.
Where do the imported cards end up?
Keeplet creates a new notebook named after the file, in your default space (if there isn't one, in the first space). Each row of the file becomes a flashcard: the first field is the question, the second is the answer. Other fields and tags are not imported, and Anki's division into decks is not rebuilt.
A notebook holds at most 250 flashcards. If the deck has more, Keeplet splits it into several notebooks, called "Name", "Name (2)", "Name (3)" and so on, up to 2,500 cards per import (10 notebooks). Imported cards are due for review right away.
Which cards are skipped?
In the summary, next to Flashcards imported and Notebooks created, you may see Cards skipped (empty or too long). Cards with an empty front or back are skipped, as are those with text over 1000 characters.
What is not imported?
- Images and audio: only text.
- Anki cloze: cards with deletions are imported as plain text, without converting the deletions to Keeplet's format. For Keeplet cloze, read How to create a cloze exercise.
- Anki history and due dates: cards start again from zero.
Frequently asked questions
Can I import an .apkg file?
No. Keeplet reads only the "Notes in Plain Text" export (.txt).
Why does it say "There are no cards to import in this file"?
Usually the file is not in the right format, or each row has only one field. Export again choosing Notes in Plain Text and check that the notes have at least two fields (front and back).
Why does it say there are too many cards?
The import accepts at most 2,500 cards per file. Split the deck into several exports.
Can I choose the destination space?
No: the import uses the default space. After importing you can move notes between notebooks: see Move notes between notebooks.
