How to export your data from Keeplet

Applies to: websiteLast updated:

On the Keeplet website you can download all your flashcards from Settings › Data, in the Export row: click JSON for a file complete with review data, or CSV for a table that opens in Excel or Google Sheets. Exporting is free and you can repeat it whenever you like.

Before you start

You must be signed in. The export includes only flashcards: plain notes, images and statistics are not in the file. Exporting is a website feature: the app for Android and iPhone does not have it.

Steps

  1. Open Settings and go to the Data section (on a phone, tap Profile in the bottom bar).
  2. In the Export row ("Export all your flashcards with review data.") choose JSON or CSV.
  3. Wait a moment: the button shows a loading indicator while Keeplet gathers your notebooks.
  4. Your browser downloads the file keeplet-export-YYYY-MM-DD.json or .csv, with today's date in the name.

What does the JSON file contain?

The JSON is meant for archiving or reprocessing your data. It contains the format version, the export date and then your spaces, their notebooks and the flashcards. For each flashcard you find:

  • the identifier, the question (content) and the answer (answer);
  • the review data (sm2): number of reviews, percentage of successful answers (retention, from 0 to 1), ease factor, interval in days, status and date of the next review.

To learn what ease and interval mean, read The SM-2 algorithm in Keeplet.

What does the CSV file contain?

The CSV has one row per flashcard and these columns, in order. The column headers are written in the language you are using on the website, English or Italian: the table shows the English version, with the Italian one in brackets.

Column Content
Space (Space) Space name
Notebook (Quaderno) Notebook name
Content (Contenuto) Flashcard question
Answer (Risposta) Answer
Reviews (Ripassi) How many times you have reviewed it
Retention % (Retention %) Percentage of successful answers
Next review (Prossimo ripasso) Date of the next review (international format)

The file uses UTF-8 encoding with the marker Excel needs: accented letters and other special characters display correctly without any settings. If you still see odd symbols, import the file choosing UTF-8 as the encoding.

Can I bring the exported data back into Keeplet?

Not with these files: Keeplet does not import its own JSON or CSV. To bring cards into Keeplet from another program there is the Anki deck import: see How to import an Anki deck.

Frequently asked questions

Does the file also contain regular notes?

No, only flashcards with their question and answer. The text of flashcards may contain the formatting marks Keeplet uses to save bold text and lists.

Can I export just one notebook?

No. The export always covers all the spaces and notebooks of the account.

Should I export before deleting my account?

Yes. The deletion confirmation window also has a JSON link that downloads the same file. Read Delete your account.

What do I do if the download doesn't start?

Check that your browser isn't blocking downloads from keeplet.app and try again. If you have many notebooks the operation takes a few more seconds.
