How to format text in Keeplet notes

Applies to: websiteLast updated:

In the Keeplet website editor you write headings and lists by typing a symbol at the start of an empty block (# , - , 1. ), while bold and italic are applied to selected text from the bar that opens with a right-click. Notes have no other formatting: no colors, images or tables.

Before you start

Open a notebook and click in a block (see Write in the editor). The symbols and the right-click bar work in notes and in the question of flashcards. The Answer field of a card is plain text instead, with no bar and no symbols.

Steps for headings and lists

  1. Click in an empty block.
  2. Type the symbol followed by a space. As soon as you press the space, the block transforms.
  3. Write the text. For lists, press Enter to add an item.
  4. To end a list, press Enter on an empty item.
What you want What you type at the start of the block
Large heading # (hash and space)
Medium heading ##
Small heading ###
Bulleted list - or *
Numbered list 1. (any number followed by a period and a space)

The transformation happens only if the block contains exactly the symbol: if you type "- " after a sentence, it stays as normal text.

How do I make text bold or italic?

  1. Select the text with your mouse.
  2. Right-click the text: a bar of icons opens. On a phone, try a long press on the selected text.
  3. Click the Bold text icon (B) or the Italic text icon (I).

The same bar also offers the button to duplicate the block and the one to delete it.

How do I remove a heading or a list?

Put the cursor at the start of the heading or item and press Backspace: the heading goes back to normal text; the first item of a list leaves the list, the others merge into the previous item.

What happens when I paste formatted text?

Keeplet keeps bold, italic, headings (up to the third level), bulleted and numbered lists. It removes everything else: colors, fonts, images and table structure. Of links, the text remains.

What about double curly braces?

Words written as {{term}} in a flashcard become blanks during review: this is the syntax of the cloze exercise. In the editor, when you leave the block, the terms between braces are highlighted. See How to create a cloze exercise.

Frequently asked questions

No. Keeplet notes are text only, with bold, italic, headings and lists. Pasted images are removed, only the text of tables remains and links keep only their text.

Why doesn't - turn into a list?

The symbol must be the only content of the block and be followed by a space. Delete the text before the symbol, or go to a new empty block, and try again.

Can I have headings of several levels?

Yes, up to three: # , ## and ### .

Can I use formatting in flashcards too?

Yes, in the question: headings, lists, bold and italic. Formatting also shows during review. The Answer field has no formatting bar, but it keeps the bold and italic of pasted text.

How do I format text in the app for Android and iPhone?

The app has a paragraph editor, where headings are written with #. Read Create a card by highlighting to see how it works.
