How to read a card's review status

Applies to: websiteLast updated:

On the Keeplet website a flashcard's review status is the label above the question: it tells you when the card comes back, with phrases like "Card, due today", "Card, back tomorrow" or "Card, 2 days late". Plain notes do not have this label because they are not reviewed.

Where do I see it?

Open a notebook: every flashcard has a small label with the sheets icon above its question. It appears in both the All view and Cards only. Other signals, at the overall level:

  • in the left menu the To review item shows how many cards are due;
  • on the Home page the card at the top says how many cards you have to review;
  • on each notebook's card, on the space page, a label such as "4 to review" counts its due cards.

What do the labels mean?

Label Meaning
Card, due today The card is new, or its due date is today
Card, back tomorrow The due date is tomorrow
Card, back in N days The due date is in N days
Card, 1 day late / N days late The due date passed one or more days ago

A newly created card does not yet have a due date set by the algorithm: it is due right away. After each review the due date is recalculated based on the rating you gave (see How to rate a card during review).

When does a card actually enter review?

The due date is calculated from the moment you rate the card. A card rated at 6 pm and scheduled for "tomorrow" becomes available again tomorrow around 6 pm, not at midnight: the label thinks in days, but review offers the card when its due date has passed. A late card is reviewed like any other: you find it in review.

How does the card change over time?

In Statistics every card is in one of three groups: new (never reviewed), learning (you are still fixing them) and learned (they only come back now and then). A card moves from one group to the next as you review it successfully; with Not at all the count of successful reviews starts again from zero. The definition of "learned" is in How to read your statistics in Keeplet.

Frequently asked questions

Why is a card I reviewed yesterday "due today" again?

Because the rating was Not at all or A little: in that case the card comes back after one day. The first time, with Somewhat it comes back after 3 days and with Great after 5.

Why is the number on the Home page different from the one in Statistics?

The Home page counts the cards that are already due right now; the By notebook list in Statistics also counts those that become due later in the day ("to review today"). Also, the session offers at most the cards of the daily goal: see Daily goal and streak in Keeplet.

Is a note converted into a card due right away?

A card created as a flashcard is due right away. If you turn a note you have just written into a card, the due date may be set a few minutes after the note's creation, so the card might not appear immediately.

What happens to notes?

Nothing: notes have no due date and do not appear in review. If you want to review one, turn it into a card: How to create a flashcard from a note in Keeplet.
