# How to rate a card during review

Applies to: website · Last updated: 2026-10-30

On the Keeplet website you rate a card with four buttons: **Not at all**, **A little**, **Somewhat** and **Great**. Answer honestly the question "How well did you remember it?": the higher the rating, the later the card shows up again in review. Each button shows right away when the card will come back.

## Before you start

The rating appears in passive mode, after **Show the answer** (if the card has an answer). In active mode and in cloze exercises the outcome is instead **Remembered** or **Didn't remember**. See [Active and passive review mode in Keeplet](/en/help/web/active-and-passive-review-mode).

## Steps

1. Read the question and try to answer in your head.
2. Press **Show the answer** and compare it with what you remembered.
3. Choose the button that best describes your memory, with the mouse or with keys 1 to 4.
4. If you pressed the wrong button, press **Undo** within the next three seconds.

## What does each rating mean?

| Rating | Key | When to choose it | When the card comes back (first time) |
|---|---|---|---|
| **Not at all** | 1 | You remembered nothing or the answer was wrong | tomorrow |
| **A little** | 2 | You only had a vague memory: you nearly got it wrong | tomorrow |
| **Somewhat** | 3 | You remembered, but with some hesitation | in 3 days |
| **Great** | 4 | You remembered right away and without doubts | in 5 days |

These times are for the first time you review a card. With **Somewhat** and **Great** the intervals then get longer: on the second successful answer the card comes back after 6 days and, from the third on, the interval is multiplied by an ease factor that depends on how you answer. With **Not at all** and **A little** the path starts again from one day. The full calculation is in [The SM-2 algorithm in Keeplet: intervals and ratings](/en/help/concepts/sm2-algorithm-in-keeplet).

## How do I choose between Somewhat and Great?

Choose **Great** only when the answer came to you right away and in full. If you had to think about it or had a doubt, choose **Somewhat**: the card will come back sooner and give you another chance to fix it. Rating honestly is more useful than always pressing the best rating, because review works when the card reappears just before you forget it.

## What happens after the rating?

The next card appears right away. You have three seconds on the **Undo** button, then the rating is sent and the due date updated. In **Statistics**, a card counts as "remembered well" if you rated it **Somewhat** or **Great**.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I change a rating after giving it?

Only right away: **Undo** appears for three seconds after the rating and is not there on the last card of the session. After that, the card follows its new interval; you can still see it again later.

### What happens if I review a card late?

You can still review it. In the notebook a card that has been due for days shows the label "Card, 2 days late" (with the real number) and is rated like the others. But lateness counts if you remember the answer: beyond 1.5 times the planned interval the card stays at the same level (the interval does not grow), beyond 2 times it goes back one level. The days shown on the buttons already take lateness into account. For the calculation of the intervals read [The SM-2 algorithm in Keeplet: intervals and ratings](/en/help/concepts/sm2-algorithm-in-keeplet).

### Why do the days on the button change from card to card?

Because they depend on the card's history: how many times you have reviewed it and how easy it is for you. The button shows a preview of the interval, calculated on the card you are looking at.

### How important is it to be honest?

Very: the algorithm trusts your ratings. If you press **Great** when you had doubts, the card will come back too late and you risk forgetting it.

### How do I rate a card in the app for Android and iPhone?

In the app, review uses a card to flip and four ratings, but with the app's own controls. Read the dedicated guide: [How to rate a card: the four ratings](/en/help/app/rate-a-card).
