# Keeplet keyboard shortcuts

Applies to: website · Last updated: 2026-10-29

The Keeplet website has keyboard shortcuts for searching, writing in the editor and reviewing: Ctrl+K (⌘K on Mac) opens search, Enter creates a new block, Alt+↑ and Alt+↓ move a block, Space shows a card's answer and keys 1 to 4 rate it. On a Mac use ⌘ instead of Ctrl and Option instead of Alt.

## Search

| Shortcut | What it does |
|---|---|
| Ctrl+K (⌘K) | From any page of the personal area opens **Search**; if you are already in search it puts the cursor back in the field |
| ↓ and ↑ | In search, move through the results |
| Enter | In search, opens the highlighted result in its notebook |

## Note editor

| Shortcut | What it does |
|---|---|
| Enter | Closes the block and creates a new one; the text after the cursor moves into the new block |
| Shift+Enter | Starts a new line within the same block |
| Backspace at the start of a block | Merges the block with the previous one |
| Backspace in an empty block | Deletes the block |
| Delete at the end of a block | Merges the block with the next one |
| Alt+↑ / Alt+↓ | Moves the block where your cursor is up or down |
| Ctrl+Z (⌘Z) | Undoes the last deletion or merge of blocks (up to 20); it does not undo typing |
| Ctrl+A (⌘A) with the cursor in a block | Selects all blocks |
| Ctrl+C (⌘C) with blocks selected | Copies the text of the selected blocks |
| Backspace with blocks selected | Deletes the selected blocks (asks for confirmation for saved flashcards) |
| Esc | Closes the **Create card** bubble |
| Tab | With text selected and the bubble visible, moves focus to **Create card** |

In flashcards:

| Shortcut | What it does |
|---|---|
| Enter in the question | Moves to the **Answer** field (the text after the cursor goes into the answer) |
| Enter in the answer | Creates a new flashcard below |
| ↑ in the answer | Goes back to the question |
| ↓ in the answer | Goes to the next block |

## Writing shortcuts (Markdown)

You type them at the start of an empty block, followed by a space. Details in [How to format text in Keeplet notes](/en/help/web/format-text-in-notes).

| You type | You get |
|---|---|
| `# ` | Large heading |
| `## ` | Medium heading |
| `### ` | Small heading |
| `- ` or `* ` | Bulleted list |
| `1. ` (or another number) | Numbered list |
| Enter on an empty item | Exits the list |
| Backspace at the start of an item or heading | Removes the list or heading |

## Review

| Shortcut | What it does |
|---|---|
| Space | Shows the answer (passive mode with a card that has an answer, and cloze exercises) |
| 1 | Passive: **Not at all**. Cloze exercises, and active mode once the exercise is complete: **Remembered** |
| 2 | Passive: **A little**. Cloze exercises, and active mode once the exercise is complete: **Didn't remember** |
| 3 | Passive: **Somewhat**. Cloze exercises and active mode: skips the card without rating it |
| 4 | Passive: **Great** |
| Tab | Switches between **Active** (reorder exercise) and **Passive** mode, with the same control as the selector: if the card does not have enough words the warning appears and you stay in passive |

If you press a key from 1 to 4 in passive mode, or 1 and 2 in a cloze exercise, while the answer is still hidden, the card flips and you have to give the rating with a second press. On a touch screen you can use the buttons or swipes: see [How to review on your phone with swipe](/en/help/web/review-on-your-phone-with-swipe). For details see [How to do a review session in Keeplet](/en/help/web/do-a-review-session).

## Frequently asked questions

### What are the main Keeplet shortcuts?

Ctrl+K to search, Enter for a new block, Alt+↑/↓ to move a block, Ctrl+Z to undo the deletion of blocks, Space to show the answer and 1-4 to rate cards.

### Do they work on Mac?

Yes. Use ⌘ (Cmd) instead of Ctrl and Option instead of Alt.

### Are there shortcuts for bold and italic?

Keeplet does not add its own: bold and italic are applied from the bar that opens with a right-click on the selected text (see [How to format text in Keeplet notes](/en/help/web/format-text-in-notes)).

### Why doesn't Ctrl+Z undo what I typed?

In the editor Ctrl+Z is reserved for blocks: it restores deleted or merged ones. To correct text you typed, edit it by hand.

### Are there shortcuts in the app for Android and iPhone?

The app is used by touch. For review read [How to review your cards every day in the app](/en/help/app/review-cards-every-day).
