# How to create a cloze exercise in Keeplet

Applies to: website · Last updated: 2026-10-29

On the Keeplet website a cloze exercise is a flashcard in which you write the terms to hide between double curly braces, for example "The {{mitochondrion}} produces the cell's energy". During review each term becomes a blank `[...]` to recall. It works in the question of a flashcard, not in plain notes.

## Before you start

You need a flashcard: create one as explained in [How to create a flashcard from a note](/en/help/web/create-a-flashcard-from-a-note), or turn a note into one with **Turn into card**. The block must be a flashcard: `{{ }}` markers written in a regular note do not generate exercises.

## Steps

1. Open the notebook and click in the question of a flashcard (the field that shows "What do you want to remember?" when it is empty).
2. Write the full sentence, for example "The brain forgets 70% of what you study in a day".
3. Type `{{` before the term to hide and `}}` after it. The result is "The brain forgets {{70%}} of what you study in a day". Keeplet has no button for this: you type the braces by hand.
4. To hide several terms, wrap each one in its own braces, for example "The {{mitochondrion}} produces {{ATP}}".
5. Move to another block: the terms between braces are highlighted in the editor, so you can spot them at a glance.
6. Wait for "Saved at" at the top. The **Answer** field can stay empty: cloze exercises don't need it.

Writing rules: the term cannot be empty and cannot contain the `}` symbol. It can be a word, a number or several words together.

## How does a cloze exercise work during review?

1. The question appears with the first term replaced by `[...]` and, if there are several terms, the indicator "Term 1 of 2".
2. Try to recall the hidden word, then click **Show the answer** (from the keyboard: Space). The term appears under the sentence.
3. Click **Remembered** or **Didn't remember**.
4. If the card has more terms, you move on to the next one ("Term 2 of 2"); the other terms are shown in plain text.
5. When the terms are finished, Keeplet records a single result for the card: if you answered **Didn't remember** for even one term, the card counts as not remembered.

Cards with cloze always use this exercise, whichever mode (Active or Passive) is selected. See [Active and passive review mode](/en/help/web/active-and-passive-review-mode).

## Where can I find a ready-made example?

In the **Keeplet in 30 seconds** notebook, in the **Sample space** created on your first visit, the second flashcard is a cloze: "The brain forgets {{70%}} of what you study in a day. Who saves it?".

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I create a cloze by selecting text with a button?

Not in the current version of the website: there is no button in the right-click bar. Write the double braces around the term, or type `{{`, the term and `}}`.

### Can I use Anki's cloze syntax, `{{c1::term}}`?

No. Keeplet reads only `{{term}}`, without numbers and without `c1::`. If you paste an Anki card, rewrite the braces in Keeplet's format.

### Can I hide more than one word in the same sentence?

Yes. Each pair of braces is a step of the review, and the final rating is the worst of the steps.

### Does cloze also work in a note?

No: cloze exercises are reviewed only if the block is a flashcard. Turn the note into one with **Turn into card** from the handle menu.

### How do I review cloze cards in the app for Android and iPhone?

The app has a separate guide: start from [Review cards every day](/en/help/app/review-cards-every-day).
