# How to write and paste notes in the app

Applies to: Android and iPhone app · Last updated: 2026-10-29

In the Keeplet app for Android and iPhone you write notes in paragraphs: open a notebook, tap **Add notes**, write or paste the text and press return twice to start a new paragraph. A line that starts with `#` becomes a heading. Text pasted from Notion or other markdown editors is cleaned of its symbols.

## Before you start

You need a notebook: see [How to create, rename and delete a notebook in the app](/en/help/app/create-a-notebook). Writing works without an account and without a connection.

## Steps

1. From the **Notebooks** tab open the notebook and stay in the **Notes** view.
2. Tap **Add notes** at the bottom (on narrow screens you only see the pencil). Alternatively, tap the empty space under the last paragraph, where it says "Tap to add notes…".
3. In the **Text** field write or paste. The **How to write** badge next to the title opens a reminder with the rules below.
4. To start a new paragraph, press return twice, leaving an empty line.
5. To make a heading, start the line with `#` and a space, for example `# The French Revolution`.
6. Tap **Save**. The paragraphs are added at the end of the notebook, in the order you wrote them.

If the text will become several paragraphs, under the field you read "The text will be split into 3 paragraphs." **Save** stays disabled until there is at least one paragraph with text: a lone `#` doesn't count.

## What counts as a paragraph?

- **Two line breaks in a row** (an empty line in between, even with spaces) separate two paragraphs.
- **A single line break** stays inside the same paragraph: you can use it to break a line in a poem or a formula.
- **A line that starts with `#`** is always a paragraph of its own, even without an empty line before or after. On the page it appears without the hash marks, in a heading typeface. The number of `#` doesn't change the look: the app has only one heading level.
- **Text longer than 1000 characters** is automatically split at the end of a sentence: see [Keeplet app limits](/en/help/app/app-limits).

## What happens when I paste text?

When you save with **Add notes**, the text goes through a filter that removes markdown syntax and leaves only plain text. The filter acts when you save, not while you paste: in the field you still see the text as it was.

| In the pasted text | What remains in the note |
|---|---|
| Headings `#` … `######` | A paragraph of its own, with `# ` in front |
| Bulleted, numbered and checkbox lists | One entry per line, without the symbol |
| Bold, italic, strikethrough, inline code | The text, without the symbols |
| Links and images | The link text or the image description; the address disappears |
| Code blocks | The content in a single paragraph, without the fences |
| Quotes with `>` | The text, without the symbol |
| HTML tags | Removed |
| Tables | One line for each table row, with cells joined by " – " |
| Horizontal rules (`---`) and repeated empty lines | Removed or reduced to a single empty line |

The filter acts on everything you save with **Add notes**, even if you type it by hand: `**word**` becomes `word`. An underscore inside a word, as in `variable_name`, stays as it is.

## How do I edit a paragraph I've already written?

Tap the paragraph's text: **Edit paragraph** opens. Change the text and tap **Save**, or tap **Delete** and confirm "Delete this paragraph?". When editing there is no markdown filter: the text stays as you write it. If you insert an empty line, the paragraph splits in two: the first takes the original's place and the others follow it.

If you close the sheet with unsaved text, the app asks "Discard the text you wrote?" with **Discard** and **Cancel**.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why did asterisks and hash marks disappear from my text?

Because the app read them as markdown and removed them when saving. The only syntax that stays is the heading with a leading `#`. If you need a symbol, add it with **Edit paragraph**, where the filter doesn't act.

### Can I use bold or bullet lists?

No: in the app, notes are plain text. To highlight what matters, you create a card from a sentence: see [How to create a card by highlighting text](/en/help/app/create-a-card-by-highlighting). The website has an editor with more formatting: see [How to format text in Keeplet notes](/en/help/web/format-text-in-notes).

### Can I paste a whole lesson at once?

Yes. The app splits it into paragraphs at the empty lines and shows how many will be created. If the notebook doesn't have room for all of them, "A notebook can hold at most 250 items, notes and cards together." appears and nothing is saved.
