# How to create, rename and delete a notebook in the app

Applies to: Android and iPhone app · Last updated: 2026-10-29

In the Keeplet app for Android and iPhone you create a notebook from the **Notebooks** tab: tap **New notebook**, type the name and tap **Create**. To rename or delete it, press and hold the notebook in the list, or open it and tap the three-dot button.

## Before you start

A notebook gathers the notes for one subject and the cards you make from them. You can create as many as you like, even without an account. The name can have up to 100 characters.

The app does not have the website's "spaces": with an account, notebooks go into the default space. Without an account, the app prepares a first notebook for you called **General**.

## Steps to create a notebook

1. Tap **Notebooks** in the bottom bar.
2. Tap the **+** button (**New notebook**) next to the magnifier at the top, or the **New notebook** button at the end of the list. If the list is empty, you find it under "You don't have any notebooks yet. Create one for each subject."
3. In the **New notebook** sheet, type the name in the **Notebook name** field.
4. Tap **Create**.

The notebook appears in the list with "0 cards". Tap it to open it and start [writing notes](/en/help/app/write-and-paste-notes). If it is your first time and you have nothing of your own yet, the app may first offer you the guide: see [The guided first notebook](/en/help/app/guided-first-notebook).

The **Create** button stays off while the name is empty; beyond 100 characters "At most 100 characters" appears.

## How do I rename a notebook?

1. From the **Notebooks** list, press and hold the notebook, or open it and tap the three-dot button (**Notebook actions**).
2. Tap **Rename**.
3. In the **Rename notebook** sheet, change the name and tap **Save**.

**General** can be renamed too.

## How do I delete a notebook?

1. Open the notebook's actions as above.
2. Tap **Delete**.
3. The app asks: "Delete the notebook "History"? You will also lose its notes and cards." Tap **Delete** to confirm, **Cancel** to change your mind.

The app has no command to recover a deleted notebook. If you have an account, the deletion is sent to the server at the next sync and the notebook disappears from your account too, and therefore from the website. The **General** notebook cannot be deleted: the option does not appear.

## What is in the notebook menu?

Besides **Rename** and **Delete** there is **Share**, which creates a read-only link and requires an account. Whoever receives the link can open it by following [How to add a shared notebook in the Keeplet app](/en/help/app/add-a-shared-notebook).

## How are notebooks sorted?

First the default notebook (**General**), then the others in alphabetical order, with numbers in natural order ("Lesson 2" before "Lesson 10"). Each row shows the number of cards and, highlighted, how many are due for review now.

## Frequently asked questions

### How many notebooks can I create?

The number of notebooks has no limit in the app. The limit is inside each notebook: 250 items, notes and cards together. See [App limits](/en/help/app/app-limits).

### Can I have two notebooks with the same name?

The app allows it. Be careful when you have an account, though: a new notebook that has the same name (ignoring uppercase) as one you already have in the website's default space is merged with that one the first time it is sent to the server, instead of staying separate.

### Where do I find the notebook on the website?

On the website, notebooks live inside a space (the code calls them "sections"). Notebooks created in the app appear in the default space: see [How to create a notebook on the website](/en/help/web/create-a-notebook).

### Can I move notes and cards from one notebook to another?

Yes, from each paragraph's menu or by selecting more than one: see [Move, duplicate and convert paragraphs in the app](/en/help/app/move-duplicate-and-convert-paragraphs).
