# How to create a card with the + button

Applies to: Android and iPhone app · Last updated: 2026-10-29

In the Keeplet app for Android and iPhone you create a card without starting from a note by using the **+** button (**New card**), the yellow button on the right of the bottom bar: choose the notebook, write the **Question** and the **Answer** and tap **Save**. The card is immediately among those to review.

## Before you start

- The **+** button shows on the four tabs **Today**, **Notebooks**, **Statistics** and **Profile**. Inside a notebook the bottom bar is replaced by the notebook's own bar and there is no **+**: to create a card from there, see the section below.
- You need at least one notebook. Without an account the app uses **General**, which is created the first time you save.
- To make a card from a sentence in your notes instead, highlight the text: see [How to create a card by highlighting text](/en/help/app/create-a-card-by-highlighting).

## Steps

1. Tap the **+** button on the right of the bottom bar.
2. The **New card** screen opens. At the top, the **Notebook** row shows where the card will go: usually the last notebook you opened or used. To change it, tap the row and choose another notebook from the list, or tap **New notebook**.
3. Write the **Question**. It is optional: the hint says "Optional: without a question the answer shows right away".
4. Write the **Answer**. It is required.
5. Tap **Save**.

After saving, the fields empty, the cursor returns to **Question** and for two seconds the button says **Card saved**: you can write the next card in the same notebook right away. When you are done, tap **Done** at the top.

If you tap **Done** with text written and not saved, the app asks "Discard the text you wrote?" with **Discard** and **Cancel**.

## Where does the card go?

To the end of the chosen notebook, after the last item. In the **Notes** view it appears as a block with question and answer; in the **Cards** view as a row in the list. Since it is new and never reviewed, you find it already in **Today**, within your daily goal. See [See cards in notes and the cards list](/en/help/app/see-cards-in-notes-and-the-cards-list).

## Can I create a card while I'm inside a notebook?

Yes. Open the notebook, switch to the **Cards** view and tap **New card** (if there are no cards yet) or the empty space below the last one, which says "Tap to add a card…". The same screen opens with that notebook already chosen.

## What happens the first time?

If you have no content of your own yet, tapping **+** makes the app offer the guide first: the "Want a guide?" sheet has **Guide me** and **No, thanks**. With **No, thanks** the **New card** screen opens normally and the guide is not offered again. See [The guided first notebook](/en/help/app/guided-first-notebook).

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I create a card without a question?

Yes: it is a "prompt". In review it appears already flipped, with the answer in view. Without an answer, though, **Save** stays off.

### How long can a card be?

The question and the answer can each have up to 1000 characters. Beyond 900 you see a counter; beyond 1000 "At most 1000 characters" appears and **Save** turns off. A notebook holds at most 250 items: if it is full you see "A notebook can hold at most 250 items, notes and cards together." See [App limits](/en/help/app/app-limits).

### What do I see if I have no notebook?

If you have an account with no notebooks, the screen says "You need a notebook to create a card." with the **New notebook** button. Without an account the app uses **General**.

### How do I fix a card I already saved?

Tap its block in the notebook, or the **Edit card** pencil during review. To delete it, choose **Delete card** in the edit sheet.
