# How to create a card by highlighting text

Applies to: Android and iPhone app · Last updated: 2026-10-29

In the Keeplet app for Android and iPhone you create a card by highlighting a sentence in your notes: press and hold a word, drag to the end of the sentence and tap **Create card**. The sentence becomes the answer, you write the question and tap **Save**. The sentence stays highlighted in the note.

## Before you start

- You need a notebook with at least one paragraph of notes. To write it, open the notebook and tap **Add notes**: the app splits the text you type or paste into paragraphs (two line breaks in a row start a new paragraph).
- Cards work without an account, even offline.
- In the app a "card" is what the website calls a "flashcard".

## Steps

1. From the **Notebooks** tab, open the notebook and check that you are in the **Notes** view (at the top you choose between **Notes** and **Cards**).
2. Press and hold a word in the sentence you want to remember.
3. Drag the selection handles to the end of the sentence. If the selection starts in the middle of a word, the app extends it to the word's boundaries.
4. In the bubble that appears, tap **Create card**. Next to it you also find **Copy**.
5. The **Create card** sheet opens: the **Answer** field already contains the sentence you chose and the cursor is on **Question**. Write the question.
6. Tap **Save**.

The question is optional: if you leave it empty, the card in review shows the answer right away (useful for a simple "prompt" to reread). The answer, on the other hand, is required.

## What happens next

- The sentence gets a highlighter stroke in the paragraph, so you always see what you have already turned into a card.
- Under the paragraph the card appears, in a box with question and answer, and the counter next to **Cards** goes up by one.
- The card is due right away: you find it on the **Today** screen. When you review it, **See in the note** shows you, in a "From your note" sheet, the paragraph it comes from.
- You can create several cards from the same paragraph, one for each sentence.

To change a card, tap its block, or tap the **Card actions** handle and choose **Edit**. From there you can also **Turn into note**, **Duplicate**, **Move to another notebook…** or **Delete**. In review you find the **Edit card** pencil on the card itself.

## Can I create a card without highlighting?

Yes, in two ways:

- Tap the **+** button (**New card**) on the right of the bottom bar (inside a notebook the bar is not there: go back): choose the **Notebook**, write **Question** and **Answer** and tap **Save**. After saving, the fields empty for the next card; **Done** closes the screen.
- On a paragraph, tap the **Paragraph actions** handle and choose **Turn into card**: the paragraph's text becomes the question and you write the answer.

## What limits should I know about?

| Limit | Value |
|---|---|
| Length of question and answer | 1000 characters each (the counter appears beyond 900) |
| Items per notebook | 250, notes and cards together |

If the notebook is full the app shows "A notebook can hold at most 250 items, notes and cards together." Move some material to another notebook or delete it.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why don't I see "Create card" when I select text?

The bubble with **Create card** only appears if you have selected some text and you are in the **Notes** view outside the paragraph selection mode. Press and hold a word until the handles appear, then drag. If you just tap the paragraph, the text editor opens instead.

### Can I highlight a heading?

Yes. A heading (a line that starts with `#`) is a paragraph like any other and you can select part of it.

### What happens if I edit the paragraph after creating the card?

The card stays as it is. The highlighter stroke and the **See in the note** link depend on the answer's text: if you change the sentence in the paragraph and it no longer matches the answer, the stroke disappears and the link does not appear.

### How do I create a card with a hidden word (cloze)?

The app has no cloze exercise: it is a feature of the Keeplet website. See [How to create a cloze exercise on the website](/en/help/web/create-a-cloze-exercise).

### Do I need an account?

No. You can create cards and review them without an account; to save them on the server see [Save your progress](/en/help/app/save-your-progress).
